Highway 12 (Delaware Route 12), near Frederica / Felton, Kent County, Delaware

Delaware Route 12 is a rural state highway that runs from the Maryland state line at Whiteleysburg eastward through Felton to an interchange with Delaware Route 1 near Frederica. The stretch in the Frederica–Felton area passes through agricultural land, small residential clusters, and the edges of the Murderkill River watershed. Frederica itself is a small historic river town. No major documented crime, large-scale accident cluster, or historically significant event is uniquely tied to this segment of the highway in local historical records. The road appears in one regional ghost-lore compilation primarily because of a single anecdotal legend.

Reported Hauntings and Folklore

According to a brief local legend recorded on the crowdsourced site HauntedPlaces.org and referenced in Patricia A. Martinelli’s 2006 book Haunted Delaware, a ghost dog with glowing red eyes is said to appear along the roadside on Highway 12 west of Frederica (near Felton). The origin story claims that an angry tenant murdered his landlord, disposed of the body by grinding it up and feeding it to a dog, and that the dog’s spirit now walks the road at night. A few user comments on the HauntedPlaces entry describe personal encounters with a large dog, tire damage, or a pursuing animal; these remain unverified anecdotal reports. The legend does not appear in contemporary newspaper archives or major Delaware historical sources as a documented event. It is a minor piece of local roadside folklore rather than a widely researched or frequently reported haunting.
