Bray Road, Elkhorn, Wisconsin

Bray Road is a rural farm road outside Elkhorn, in Walworth County. It is not a ghost highway in the usual sense. The story is an animal.

The Beast of Bray Road is the name given to a wolf-like creature reported on and near the road from the 1930s into the 1990s. An early account places a sighting in 1936 at the St. Coletta school grounds in Jefferson, where a night watchman said he saw something digging on a burial mound. Reports picked up in the 1980s and 1990s: a figure crossing the road, something eating roadkill while holding the food in its paws, a driver who said she hit a shape and was chased back to the car. The Walworth County Week assigned reporter Linda Godfrey to the story. She started skeptical, interviewed witnesses for decades, and wrote The Beast of Bray Road. Skeptics point at misidentified wolves, dogs, and bears. No body, track cast, or photo has settled it. The road is still a farm road. The beast is the folklore attached to it.
